Oromia United Soccer Club started the Australian Oromo Soccer Tournament in 2003. The tournament is held annually during holiday break in the Australian sporting capital city of Melbourne.

The first tournament was held in April 2003, during the Easter weekend. Due to unforeseen circumstances, there was no tournament held in 2004. Therefore, the second tournament took place in January 2005. This was made possible with the support of Oromo Community Association.

In total six teams participate in the tournament. The majority of teams are from the Oromo community and other teams from the horn of African communities. The tournament takes place during the first two week ends of January each year.

The 2nd tournament was organised by youth from Oromia United Soccer Club in January 2005. The tournament was a great success, it amazed the African communities and set a new level of standards.

In 2006 a new committee was formed to organise the event. As anticipated the tournament was a great success. The soccer enthusiasts of the Oromo community followed the tournament with great interest.

The juniors of Oromo community from different parts of Melbourne also take part in the tournament. It is great they are given an oppurtunity to participate. These are the future of Oromo and Australian soccer.

We can reflect on how successful the Australian Oromo Soccer Tournament has become. It does not matter who wins the competition, everyone enjoys the event. The tournament provides a great opportunity for young people to realise their potential.

With good planning and improvements, no doubt future tournaments will be even better success.
